Diablo III On PS3 And PS4 Developed To Have More Of An Action Feel

'

Diablo III is headed to the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4, and Blizzard say they’re recreating the game’s UI and controls from the ground up, in order to make them work with a gamepad. In addition to making certain things easier, this also involves adding new features to the game that they feel console players would expect.

'

“When you flick the right stick, your character actually performs a sort of dodge move that is unique to the console,” says Josh Mosqueira, Lead Console Designer on Diablo III.

'

“And we added that thing first because PlayStation players are going to have this expectation that, ‘as a console game, I should be able to do that. I should be able to have this cool sort of dodge mechanic.’ And we wanted to give them that.”

'

Diablo III’s controls for console have been reworked to give the game more of an action feel, Blizzard say. Using a controller to move your character around makes the game feel more “intimate” and different from using a mouse. They also took into account that, unlike PC players, players on console sit a good distance away from their TVs, and this factored into their control decisions as well.

'

Blizzard also plan to use the touchpad on the PlayStation 4’s Dualshock 4 controller in some manner.

'

“What we didn’t want to do is simplify the experience,” Mosqueira clarifies. “Because at the end of the day, Diablo’s awesome because of all the different items you can get and all the different powers those items have, so we didn’t want to sacrifice that.”

Square Enix On Bringing Theatrhythm To iOS, Adding Songs From Other Series

Square Enix On Bringing Theatrhythm To iOS, Adding Songs From Other Series

Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy made its debut on Nintendo 3DS and in December the game was re-released for iOS. While Square Enix has ported DS games to iOS, Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy is their first 3DS to iOS port. We asked the mobile development team about the challenges of porting Theatrhythm.

'

"It was quite a challenge technology-wise to adapt a rhythm-based action game to the iOS and to optimize the gameplay experience. Specifically, it was important for us to keep the music and video synchronized even with the high frame rate of the animation, and optimizing the gameplay experience using the touch screen. Even while we were developing this for the 3DS, we had pushed the limits of what we can do specifically for that device.

'

So when we switched over to programming for the iOS version and tested it out for the first time, the movement of the triggers wasn’t very smooth, and it was not a very optimized gameplay experience. From there, we needed to go through much trial and error of both technology and how the game is set up in order to get to our ideal state, including the way the touch controls felt. Also, we didn’t want to compromise the quality of the beautiful hi-resolution graphics, so we put in all we could to accommodate for the acceleration of processing and rendering. At the end, I think we were able to give this game a wonderful feel on the gameplay and the animation!"

'

Square Enix On Bringing Theatrhythm To iOS, Adding Songs From Other Series

"There are 2 major additions in terms of features on the iOS version: 'Quest Medley' and 'Edit Mode.' Both are indispensible elements for the game style of the iOS version, in which the player chooses (and downloads) the songs that they want. With the Quest Medley mode, you can play through your favorite songs one after the other and enjoy the sense of going on one big adventure using downloaded 'scores' created in the Edit Mode by players from around the world. With these elements, this game has the potential to provide an infinite play cycle. Please look for (or make your own!) scores that challenge you beyond what is prepared in the official version, or arranged to your liking, and enjoy the world of your favorite Final Fantasy songs to your hearts’ content!"

'

"Also, this is a subtler feature of the game, but if you shake your iDevice during party selection, the screen switches to a slot machine and you can select your party at random. This feature is one of my personal favorites! There are other parts of the game in which you can activate a certain function by shaking your iDevice, so I recommend you trying it out."

'

As the title suggests, Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy features music from the Final Fantasy, but Square Enix expanded the track selection on iOS with songs from Final Fantasy Tactics and Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles. I asked if they had plans to include songs from other Square Enix series like the Mana games or the two Chrono titles to Theatrhythm.

'

"Of course, if the iOS version is strongly supported by the community worldwide and if there is a great demand for additional songs, we believe we will need to start considering adding more songs to our library in order to expand the Theatrhythm world.

'

Also, although I understand that there are even more challenges in releasing songs from other game titles, if there is a strong voice from our community backing us up, I think we can overcome such obstacles."

Hmm hellip; Another Digimon Trademark Filed By Bandai

Hmm… Another Digimon Trademark Filed By BandaiAside from the Digimon online PC games Namco Bandai hasn't done much with the series in the West. Out of the blue, Bandai filed a trademark for Digital Monsters specifically for use with video game software, computer game software, and card games. There's a Digimon World trademark registered for use with video games, too.

Namco Bandai recently released a bunch of Digimon games in Japan like Digimon World Re:Digitize and Digimon Adventure, which retells the anime story on PSP. Digimon World Re:Digitize Decode, a port of the 2012 PSP game, is headed to Nintendo 3DS in June.

gust explains new atelier escha logy features in a lengthy game play video

Gust Explains New Atelier Escha & Logy Features In A Lengthy Game Play Video

Atelier Escha & Logy: Alchemists of the Dusk Sky has plenty of new features to show off, such as the dual protagonist combo “Double Down” and a handsome alchemist swordsman with a nifty glove. Atelier developers Gust show off their latest features in a new 46-minute gameplay feature video. Here’s a look at some of the highlights:

The video starts out with Gust showing a little bit of the game and how it has atmospheric similarities to Ayesha: The Alchemist of Dusk, with more details thanks to the use of the Dynasty Warriors engine. The shortcut feature from the previous titles of the series is still available to quickly find your way around different places. They also say that they’ve increased the number of areas by a good amount compared to past titles.

The adventure parts keep the same flow of going to different maps, fighting enemies and picking up different items scattered around the field. The monsters will vary from cute little creatures to rather cool looking beasts. To make exploring faster, they’ve included an area map feature, that allows you to check out different areas within a dungeon you’ve already visited, for less travel time spent in getting to specific areas.

After switching to Escha, they point out how quick the game loads. This screen shows a support feature that has an icon in areas that have new events. There will be plenty of events, but you can complete them whenever you feel like it and might need to choose certain ones according to how you’d like to play.

This is one of Escha’s main events, where Logy tries to figure out how she learned alchemy. Escha explains that she wasn’t actually taught it by her mother, but simply learned by watching her. She says it was like watching her cook stuff in a pot. The perplexed Logy tells her that it’d help if she could be more serious about it, which slightly frustrates Escha, as it’s the best way she could describe it.

After further explaining, Escha asks if her description was too vague. Logy then replies by saying, “No, I just need to understand things better; don’t mind me.” Then, he kindly asks her to show him from the start and he’ll pay close attention, which results in an enthusiastic Escha. These two characters are quite different from one another, and share many moments such as these.

Gust describe Logy as a kind man, but one who wouldn’t hesitate to scold others for a good reason. He seems to have a gentle ‘older brother’ or parent-like mentality when it comes to that.

Between the two characters, the gameplay isn’t too different, but they also have their differences. For example, Escha’s side focuses a bit more on overall alchemy to create different items, while Logy’s is more about enhancing weapons and equipment.

Synthesis uses the familiar recipe system, where you can try out ingredients in different orders. They say that it starts out pretty simple where you don’t need to pay attention to details as much, but once you get further it will get more tedious.

In addition, there’s a new skill feature that can be used to change the outcome of synthesis. Unlike the past games, ingredients have elemental attributes that add up to the bar (shown in the middle of the above image), which can result in various skills that can be used for the synthesis.

Gust also gave a hint on some new info about being able to use items you create, as many times you’d like. They didn’t reveal much more about that and say they will talk about it next time, but for now, they promise that it’s not something that will break any balances. It will also give players something to think about when synthesizing.

In the next part, Gust explains the basics of combat in one of the earlier boss fights. You can have a party of up to 6 players, and the cost turn battle-system will come in play where actions will have an effect on the order.

The support system will also play a bit role in battles, as it can be used for offense and defense. For example, one can use it to cover allies from attacks. This feature will depend on the gauge shown on the bottom right of the screen. It charges up by doing any actions, but using items will increase it the most. Increasing it more will allow for combo support actions that can be used with all 6 party members.

Speaking of combos, there’s a special ability, called Double Draw, that is acquired after a certain event that allows Escha and Logy to do a tag attack for massive damage. The damage is dependant on the type of item used. For more details, check out our previous report.

Atelier Escha & Logy: Alchemists of the Dusk Sky is slated to be released on June 27 for PlayStation 3.
